Has the rollout of recent executive orders left you variously enraged and overwhelmed?
MACDL rejects all action taken by the current federal administration to deny our clients’ rights, especially those who are most marginalized and vulnerable. To this end, we have convened a working group to review the current and future federal policies, educate our members as to how these policies are likely to impact our clients and cases, and call to action all those who would like to fight against their implementation. We are particularly sensitive to those executive orders that would violate the civil and human rights of trangendered clients, Central and South American clients, and all others who would be irreparably harmed by their implementation.
Together we are empowered.
MACDL specifically opposes the following:
- The transfer of any transgendered client to a facility that is inappropriate for their gender, or that would otherwise place them in danger based on their gender, and the refusal to provide gender-affirming medical care.
The prosecution of educators or other school officials for teaching children subject matters related to racial or gender identity, including concepts such as transgenderism, white privilege and unconscious bias. - The prosecution of health care providers, social service providers, and legal advocates who provide services to adolescents seeking medical and/ or psychological services related to gender transitioning.
- The unfair designation of Central and South Americans and other foreign nationals as terrorists, and any related targeting for criminal prosecution and heightened immigration consequences.
- The prosecution of public employees and human service advocates who offer sanctuary or otherwise assist undocumented people in remaining in the United States.
- The arrest of any non-citizen without a warrant, and any attempts to intimidate non-citizens to prevent them from seeking emergency assistance, or attending school or religious assemblies.
- The involuntary transfer of any prisoner to El Salvador or any other foreign facility.
- Prosecution for politically motivated activities protected by free speech.
- The reimposition of the federal death penalty.
We need you.
If you would like to be involved in MACDL’s response to any of these issues, please contact us directly. We anticipate that we will work in collaboration with organizations such as the Mass. ACLU, GLAD LAW, the Mass. NLG, Prisoner’s Legal Services, immigrants’ rights organizations, regional and federal bar associations, affinity bar associations, and others.
Best,
Shira, Jane, Asaf, Alyssa, Lisa, and Victoria
